“National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples…” (National NAIDOC Week website for more information: https://www.naidoc.org.au/about/naidoc-week)
The first NAIDOC WEEK was held in 1975. It was the culmination of years of protests and marches for recognition. For more information: https://www.naidoc.org.au/about/history
Whereas Reconciliation Week offers an opportunity for non-Aboriginal Australians to initiate events and activities with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and groups and explore working together, NAIDOC WEEK is the time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as the longest continuing culture on this continent, predating the rest of us by tens of thousands of years, to celebrate their cultures and successes and invite non-Aboriginal Australians to learn and celebrate with them.
As well as local events there will be a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander content on a number of Television networks, especially NITV, SBS and ABC, including live coverage of the NAIDOC WEEK AWARD CEREMONY on Saturday 5 July.
Beginning 5 July 2025 there are a number of NAIDOC Week events taking place around Mudgee, Gulgong and Kandos (see below), including events led by local Wiradjuri knowledge holders, with an invitation to all to celebrate and learn.
